College and Career Exploration and Planning

As school counselors, we complete a multitude of tasks everyday to help students become successful inside and outside of the school building. We have a passion for assisting students to become their best selves. In order to be most effective, we opperate on the notion of being a preventative program. The best way to do this is to offer a comprehensive guidance program that encompasses three spheres of influence: academic planning, personal/social counseling, and college and career guidance. To help understand these three spheres and other services that are offered, we've highlighted a few topics below.

How We Help

COUNSELING:

College and Career Center

Graduation Requirements

Anxiety

Union's College and Career Center (CCC) offers a variety of services to our students. We provide College Counselors who assist students in the college application process as well as helping them determine a career that would fit them best. Within the CCC, our Career Connect program offers Service Learning and Community Partnerships available to students in order to explore careers in the community.

Credit Recovery Planning

One of our main focuses is helping students achieve their high school diploma. We manage all credits and test scores to keep track of every students' path to graduation.

Anxiety is becoming an increasing concern for many students in today's schools. Anxiety is a normal emotion until it interferes with every day activities. We can work to reduce these feelings by targeting their triggers. For more information on Anxiety click the link for the National Institute of Mental Health.

Domestic Violence and Teen Dating

Naviance/Student Transcripts

Credit Recovery becomes necessary when students fail one or more classes. Classes can be made up through Night School or Summer School. We will help students enroll once this becomes necessary.

It's never too early to start teaching students about healthy relationships and good dating habits. The Domestic Violence Intervention Services of Tulsa is an excellent resource to learn more about signs of domestic violence or to receive help. For the crisis hotline please call: (918) 743-5763

Naviance is a college and career exploration program. Students can use this to take career inventories to help them see the different careers they might enjoy. Naviance is also used for students to fill out the College Common Application and to order student transcripts.

Mental Health Counseling Referrals

Meeting Basic Needs

Suicide Awarness and Screening

If a student is needing more counseling than we can provide at the school we will refer to outside agencies. Union does have a partnership with the local counseling agency, CREOKS. Students who are on SoonerCare are able to see a CREOKS counselor on site at the high school. Students not on SoonerCare can still be referred to an outside agency.

Many students are lacking clothes, food, or other basic needs. We partner with community organizations such as the Clothes Closet and Food Pantry to provide these needs. If you or someone you know is not getting basic needs met, please follow this link for the 211 Helpline as well as contact the counselor so that we may provide more assistance.

Suicide threats and suicidal thoughts/ideations have been increasing with teenagers. If students are threatening to harm themselves in any way we will work with parents and outside agencies to get the student help. If someone you know is in immediate danger please call:

  • 911

  • The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:   1-800-273-8255

  • COPES Tulsa 24/7 Crisis Hotline:             (918) 744-4800

Oklahoma's Promise

Time Management

LGBTQ Training and Sensitivity

Oklahoma's Promise is a scholarship fund for Oklahoma students who qualify. Students MUST sign up by the end of their Sophomore year to be eligible for the scholarship. Counselors do their best to make sure students are maintaining the required GPA and course schedule required to obtain the scholarship.

Time management is a skill that many of our students struggle with. If learned, however, this is a skill that will serve them well during their high school career and beyond. Counselors will work with students individually and in classroom lessons to develop this skill, and many others, to help keep students on track towards graduation.

Through professional development, we have received sensitivity training on how to address our LGBTQ students. As counselors, we are advocates for all students and strive to be a safe place for these specific individuals. If you have further questions or would like to learn more about LGBTQ Youth, please visit the PFLAG website.
